What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting thin needles into the body. At Grove Family Chiropractic, we have been sharing the benefit of acupuncture with residents of Maple Grove, MN for many years. Following are the answers to several questions our chiropractor frequently receives regarding acupuncture.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture needles help the body release beneficial chemicals like endorphins, norepinephrine, and enkephalin. These help to relieve pain and promote relaxation.

What are Acupuncture Needles Like?

In ancient times, acupuncture needles were made of stones, bones, copper, iron, and gold. Today, the needles are hair-thin, solid, and usually made of stainless steel. Modern needles are disposable, which greatly reduces any chance of infection.

What do Acupuncture Needles Feel Like?

Acupuncture is typically a painless experience. Many of our patients report feelings of relaxation during acupuncture sessions. Any discomfort is typically experienced as a pinch, slight sting, or dull ache. However, these feelings should quickly give way to feelings of relief.

Who Benefits from Acupuncture?

According to the Mayo Clinic, acupuncture has been known to help with, arthritis, migraines, and severe menstrual cramps. It also relieves neck and back pain. Acupuncture also helps with nausea from chemotherapy.

What are the Side Effects of Acupuncture?

There are very few side effects. There may be some bleeding, bruising, and soreness at the insertion sites. Most people feel very relaxed or sleepy, while others feel energized.

Can Acupuncture Replace My Pain Medication?

Some people can reduce their need for pain medication with regular acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture can also be used with other alternative healing methods like chiropractic manipulation.

How Long are Acupuncture Sessions?

Your first session will take about an hour as our acupuncturist will need to learn about your medical history. Afterward, sessions are only about half an hour. You will start experiencing the full range of benefits after a few weeks.

  • "I visited Dr. Laura after having tension headaches for several months. After the first adjustment, I had instant relief! I have since visited her practice for acupuncture and had the best massage I've ever experienced from Sarah. Dr. Laura is exceptionally knowledgeable in her field, and I highly recommend her!"

  • "Dr. Laura Zaker has helped me realize that the spine is movable. I'm in my early sixties and was skeptical that my persistent back pain could be addressed. After years of sharp pain, within two months, I am amazed that I no longer have the pain. The muscles in my back and neck are no longer feeling strained. I am writing this since I was fortunate to have received this unexpected physical improvement; I am a fan of Dr. Laura Zaker."
