Lower Back Pain FAQs

Lower back pain is a common issue that impacts people’s lives – some of whom miss work and other obligations due to the pain. If you live with lower back pain, you likely have some questions. Our team at Maple Grove Family Chiropractic & Acupuncture is here to give you the answers to some of the most common questions about back pain.

.

What are the most common causes of low back pain?

There can be a wide range of reasons that your lower back hurts. One of the most common is simply overuse of the muscles. Others can include spinal misalignment, sciatica, nerve compression, fractures, and herniated discs. Sometimes, it’s due to conditions like arthritis or a narrowing spinal canal.

Are there risk factors associated with low back pain?

Everyone is at some risk for lower back pain, as even turning or bending the wrong way can cause an injury. However, some people are indeed at a higher risk, including those that:

  • Have a manual job
  • Carry out repetitive movements
  • Sit for long periods
  • Don’t exercise regularly
  • Overdo it when exercising
  • Do not follow proper lifting guidelines
  • Are overweight or pregnant
  • Smoke
  • Have certain conditions such as osteoarthritis

What treatments can address low back pain?

Chiropractors have a wide range of treatment options to help, but the type of treatment you receive will depend on the root cause of your pain. Spinal adjustments and decompression therapy can address misalignment, muscle tension, sciatica, and more. Therapeutic massage and exercise can relieve tension while stretching and strengthening the spinal column.

Does exercise help or worsen low back pain?

That depends on the exercise. If you have an injury, some exercises can aggravate the issue and make it worse. However, in general, exercise can help the body heal and prevent future incidences. If you are carrying out an exercise that seems to make your pain more severe, you should stop that exercise and try something different. One of the safest things to do, though, is to visit a chiropractor who can help walk you through targeted exercises that are not only safe but also beneficial.

  • "I visited Dr. Laura after having tension headaches for several months. After the first adjustment, I had instant relief! I have since visited her practice for acupuncture and had the best massage I've ever experienced from Sarah. Dr. Laura is exceptionally knowledgeable in her field, and I highly recommend her!"

  • "Dr. Laura Zaker has helped me realize that the spine is movable. I'm in my early sixties and was skeptical that my persistent back pain could be addressed. After years of sharp pain, within two months, I am amazed that I no longer have the pain. The muscles in my back and neck are no longer feeling strained. I am writing this since I was fortunate to have received this unexpected physical improvement; I am a fan of Dr. Laura Zaker."
